On Wednesday morning we drove ourselves to the airport and dropped off the car and joined our Air Iceland flight to Heathrow. We were picked up at the airport by our long time friends David and Rosemary and taken to their home in Henley-on-Thames. We had a really good visit catching up on news. On Thursday they took us on an interesting walk along the Thames and out to lunch.

On Friday they drove us up here to Moreton-on-Marsh. It was great to be able to spend time with old friends again, and we can’t thank them enough for the hospitality.

Moreton-on-Marsh is a picturesque Cotswold tourist town. The high street has a large number of antique shops and plenty of places to eat. There is a fair on in town so I expect there will be plenty of noise at that end of town tonight.

We dropped in to the town church, just down the street. In its present incarnation it dates from the mid 1800s, but there have been earlier ones for much longer. It is fairly plain, with a significant steeple and a couple stained glass windows. And it was open – the first open church we have seen since Spain. Full points to them.
We are lodged at the Manor House (hotel), an imposing old stone building which is said to have been here in some form in 1539, although the central part dates from 1668. Our room is designated as being on the second floor but it is a rabbit warren of stairways and hallways (involving 31 steps and 11 turns) away from the entrance. And we are not the furthest. The room is spacious and well appointed even though it is up under the gable. There is no shower, but the bath does come with a resident rubber duckie. Vic and the rubber duckie must have tangled in the tub as Vic slipped and did some damage to a rib. Hopefully this won’t impact her ability to walk tomorrow.
Incidentally, a sign in reception suggests room rates start at £200. All part of the walking tour.
Note that was missed on Iceland:
The red light portion of traffic lights in Akureyri is shaped like a heart. How sweet.
