Spoleto – May 4, 2018

Enough of Rome – time to get moving.  The taxi back to the railway station was strangely cheaper than the one on the trip out.  I think he may have had some time already on the meter when we started.  A trap for new players in Rome.

Honeymoon Suite? And what is he doing?

The train to Spoleto worked well – cheaper than a Rome taxi (either direction).  There are a lot of long tunnels on the route.  Very nice hotel here – we seem to have the bridal suite.

I love going to restaurants early. We had a lovely quiet dinner. And where do you think the couple with the baby sat in this restaurant? The table next to ours?

We hit the local resturant for lunch, and it was so good, again for supper. I am happier with small town food than that of big Rome.

Spoleto, the old town, is built on a big hill – under the refuge of the old castle, as usual.  Everywhere is uphill on a narrow alley. We had a look at a couple churches, including the Duomo, the major cathedral.  They are very plain and not decorated much, although there are a few works of art by famous artists.  Or artists famous enough that even I have heard of them.  And we did have a quick look at the Textile and Costume museum.

There is a series of four escalators from the upper castle area to lower on the hill.  A huge medieval aqueduct brings water to the castle and the town, but that is for tomorrow on the walk out.

Fresco by Fra Filipo Lippi.
The old and the new. Note the satellite dishes on the old tile roofs.

The weather is showery and is not going to be pleasant for at least the next three days of our walk. Can’t win ‘em all.
