I guess it is about time I added a word or two about walking the Camino. I love the walk, what we see, who we meet, and all the interesting food and drink we encounter along the way. (And some of the food is really interesting?)
The hard part is being with Stacey whose feet don’t hurt, who doesn’t get totally winded going uphill, who can just keep walking forever without any apparent bad side effects.
I get growley when my blood sugar drops and worse when I am dehydrated (ask our friends who have done long walks with me). By mid afternoon my feet hurt, my blisters hurt, and my legs are aching.
Stacey is beginning to sound like a saint and the perfect walking companion, isn’t he? He really would be perfect if he would just volunteer to carry me, but that hasn’t happened yet.
I am really enjoying this rest day as it should give me the break I need before we tackle our longest walk so far that includes a rather large hill with some beautiful views. Stacey will have no problem but I do wonder what I will be like at the end of the day.
And after all that whining, I can still say I am loving this.

Hey MaryAnne…that looks like a serious hill….no wonder your legs are tired! I’ll bet it is tricky to keep up with your medication routine through the day….ie coffee: analgesic: food: water: power bar: food: beer: water: power bar:etc etc….and all that hiking and exploring and chatting with other walkers as well. Glad to hear you have a rest day to catch your breath, and that you are having fun (most of the time). Good luck with the major up, and I assume down, tomorrow. May the Force be with you.
In spite of the length of today’s walk we did OK. Only one new blister – soon it will be one per toe. I expected the ups and downs to be harder than they were.
Ah..I get the need for walking sticks now.
But then bull stew for dinner?
Just had lovely fish chowder in Pictou ….perfect.
On to Beddeck and the Cabot Trail tomorrow in a quest for lobster. Don’t know about you but sounds better than bull stew!
Walk on…
Casey
Enjoy the Cabot trail. I remember it as being quite beautiful.
And bull stew is really quite tasty.
I’ve been wondering how you’re doing, and might I add “I don’t know how you do it!”
Stacey is amazing and very lucky, but I give you a lot of credit for even trying to keep up. Of course I follow your journey from hotel to hotel and it sounds like you’re in a nice one for a couple of days…looked like even a pool & hot tub from the online photos? Enjoy the rest! No big news here….cleaning before we get ready to leave…not fun! Stay well!!
The path looks far from easy. All those little stones would trip me up within a 100 metres. I still think downhill is harder on the knees, shins, thighs than up hill. You are both great for doing this walk. How I wish I could mange getting as far as Capilano Mall! For me, the cure for dehydration is definitely beer. Do not hesitate to have a second!
One thing I was actually thinking about yesterday was “how much water do they need to carry with them?” I know you can refill but you probably need to carry a fair amount. Dehydration leads to fatigue.
Glad you are having a rest day. Put the feet up. Drink a cognac or another beer.
Thanks to both of you for doing this blog. Look forward to it every afternoon as you must be looking forward to sitting down or getting horizontal..
We have been carrying about a litre each but I kind of watch how much I drink. Rest stops only come so often and it is much harder to squat than it was when I was younger and going across Asia.
